Getting around Newcastle and the V8 Supercars event may be quite a difficult experience, as there will be limited parking for private vehicles and limited public transport, as the train no longer runs to the east end of Newcastle.
My top tip for getting around Newcastle during the V8 Supercar weekend is bring a good set of walking shoes because you’re going to need them. With the high amount of spectator numbers expected at the V8 Supercars I believe walking will be your best bet. You will need to walk outside of Newcastle and away from the track to meet any private transport that you have organised or just to catch the train at the interchange at Wickham.
Do not attempt to bring your private car anywhere near Newcastle over this weekend, you will end up parking a huge distance away from the track and needing to walking a long way. Start researching now if there is a ‘Park and Ride’ that is running close to you.
Newcastle Connections will be running a ‘Park and Ride’ from Charlestown accommodation hotels to the V8 Supercar tracks starting from $30 per day return or $120 for unlimited trips over the 3 days. Book our shuttle service.
If you’re coming from Nelson Bay, hopefully you are aware that the Stockton Beach ferry is included in your day pass to the V8 Supercars and they are running a ‘Park and Ride’ from the Stockton Ferry carpark. Most public transport is included in your pass for the V8 Supercars so leave the car at home and catch the train, the ferry or get a group together and all organise a local bus or hire car company to pick you up and drop you off.
If you are flying into Newcastle Airport and require an airport transfer you can wait for the 130 Port Stephens bus running into Newcastle.
Alternatively, I would try booking in advance a Newcastle taxi for the time that you’re being picked up, as during this period Newcastle taxis will be flat out in Newcastle and I find it highly unlikely that there will be a large amount of taxis in the taxi ranks at the airport.
Newcastle Connections is also running an Airport Shuttle Bus Service you will find the prices cheaper than a cab and this is a door-to-door service. I would not leave this booking to the last minute. I would be organised and get on the front foot as seats are filling fast on the shuttle buses.
At the end, all the organisers of the V8 Supercars ask of you is to be patient and understanding as this is the first major event that Newcastle is holding.
Enjoy the event and we look forward to seeing you back again next year.
